Hadapsar, 26th December 2024: The alarming rise in drug addiction among minors and youth in Pune has become a serious concern, with addiction driving several crimes in the city. In a shocking incident, a 20-year-old youth from the Hadapsar area was arrested for a house burglary worth ₹16 lakh while under the influence of drugs. The investigation revealed he had consumed five to six doses of MD (Mephedrone) injections in a day.

The Hadapsar police detained the youth following a series of house burglaries in upscale areas, including government offices and elite societies in Hadapsar. During the investigation, the youth admitted to the crime, revealing that he sold the stolen gold jewelry worth ₹16 lakh to a jeweler. However, the jeweler deceived him, paying only ₹6 lakh. The youth confessed that he used the money to purchase MD and spent over ₹5 lakh on drugs in just 20 days.

Police were shocked to learn about the extent of the youth’s drug consumption, stating that he had injected MD up to six times in a day. The police had to wait two days for the youth to recover from intoxication before interrogating him further.

The incident highlights the increasing availability and consumption of MD and other narcotics in Pune. Police stated that the youth had been addicted to drugs for several years, initially picking up the habit while living with a friend in Mumbai. He later moved to Pune and continued using MD injections, raising concerns about the unchecked drug trade in the city.

The officials are now questioning whether MD and similar drugs are being actively sold in Pune despite ongoing crackdowns. The youth’s arrest has reignited debates about the impact of drug addiction on young lives and the role it plays in fueling crimes such as thefts and burglaries. The police are further continuing their investigation into the theft case and the local drug supply chain.
