Shyam Sunder Gupta Takes Charge as Central Railway’s Principal Chief Operations Manager

Pune, 5th September 2023: In a significant development for India’s railway network, Shyam Sunder Gupta has taken the helm as the Principal Chief Operations Manager of Central Railway, commencing his tenure on September 5, 2023. Gupta succeeds the retiring Mukul Jain, who served admirably until his superannuation on August 31, 2023.

A seasoned officer of the Indian Railway Traffic Service from the 1992 batch, Shyam Sunder Gupta brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having traversed various facets of railway operations across the country. His journey through the railways includes impactful roles such as Chief Freight Transportation Manager for Central Railway, Chief Passenger Transportation Manager for Central & Western Railway, and Chief Commercial Manager (Freight Marketing) for Central Railway, to name a few.

Notably, he has also served as Chief Transportation Manager (Petroleum) for Western Railway and Sr. Divisional Commercial Manager for South Eastern Railway in Kolkata. Gupta’s illustrious career culminated in his role as Divisional Railway Manager of Raipur Division for South East Central Railway.

What sets Gupta apart is his relentless pursuit of excellence. He has honed his skills through participation in various seminars and training programs, including the Advanced Management Programme at INSEAD Singapore and ICLIF, Malaysia. His dedication and expertise have not gone unnoticed, as he has received accolades such as the Railway Minister Award in 2001, the General Manager’s Award in 2010, and recognition as the gold medallist and Best Participant in the 32nd Advanced Management Program by the National Academy of Indian Railways in Vadodara.

Before taking on his current pivotal role as Principal Chief Operations Manager for Central Railway, Shyam Sunder Gupta served as the Chief Administrative Officer (Systems) for Northern Railway.
