Pune, October 7, 2020: Pune Police have arrested three thieves for allegedly snatching lakhs of rupees from an ICICI ATM machine in front of Crown Bakery on Narveer Tanaji Malusare (Sinhgad) road.

The arrested have been identified as Vishwajit Chhatri (33) of Danda Khar in Mumbai, Prakash Shetty (46) of Dahisar, Mumbai, and Faizi Altaf Raza (43) of Tilak Colony in Ambernath, Thane. Swati Mandhare (39), a resident of Sinhgad area had lodged the complaint.

The complainant had withdrawn Rs 10,000 from an ICICI ATM kiosk in Suncity area on September 26. On September 30, while she was at home, she received a message on her mobile that Rs 40,000 had been deducted from her bank account. As soon as she realised that she had been cheated, Mandhare lodged a complaint with the Sinhagad Road Police station against unknown persons.

The police had received several such complaints from citizens who had used the same ATM and were robbed in this manner. Cyber police investigated and arrested all the three accused from Balewadi area. Cyber police sub-inspector Kiran Aute, police naik Deepika Mohite, police constables Shirish Gawde, Anil Pundalik and Somnath Bhorde solved the case.

How is the robbery done?

The pinhole circuit camera is mounted on the keypad of the ATM machine in such a way that the citizen will not notice. A ‘skimmer’ is inserted at the place where the ATM card is inserted. The skimmer reads your card details and camera captures PIN. The thieves make duplicate ATM card using the details and withdraw money from your account.
