Pune, 17th December 2024: The family of a two-wheeler rider who lost his life in an accident on the old Mumbai-Pune highway has been awarded a compensation of Rs 1.25 crore in the Lok Adalat. In addition, the rider’s son, who sustained serious injuries in the accident, received Rs 75 lakh, bringing the total compensation to Rs 1.95 crore.

The accident occurred on February 26, 2021, near Vadgaon Phata on the Pune-Mumbai highway. Praveen Dhende, 49, a senior technical manager in a pharmaceutical company, was riding a two-wheeler with his son Abhishek Praveen Dhende, 24, when a speeding car collided head-on with their vehicle. Praveen succumbed to his injuries, while Abhishek sustained severe head injuries.

Following the incident, a case was registered against the motorist at Vadgaon Maval police station, and a charge sheet was filed in court. The case is still pending.

Praveen Dhende’s untimely demise created a financial crisis for the family. At the time of the accident, Abhishek was pursuing his first year of engineering studies, while Praveen’s wife, elderly mother, and younger son were left without a source of income.

The Dhende family, represented by Advocate Bhaskar Suryavanshi, filed a joint claim in the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT), while Abhishek filed a separate claim for his injuries.

The insurance company agreed to settle the claims through the Lok Adalat process, providing a much-needed relief to the family, said Advocate Bhaskar Suryavanshi. In the settlement, the insurance company agreed to pay Rs 1.25 crore for the family’s joint claim and Rs 75 lakh for Abhishek’s individual claim.
