Pune, 12th October 2026: Students at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) staged a protest outside the girls’ hostel around 3 am on Monday, alleging that two men had harassed a student near the hostel gate and demanding action against them.

According to students who spoke to Punekar News, the incident occurred late Sunday night when two men allegedly followed and harassed a student up to the girls’ hostel gate. When other students intervened, the men allegedly threatened them, and one of the students was allegedly subjected to an attempt to assault her.

The students alleged that security personnel did not intervene despite the confrontation. They also claimed that the men cited political connections during the incident.

According to the students, a dispute subsequently arose over the hostel’s late-entry rules. They said they wanted the men to enter the hostel premises and apologise, but the university authorities refused. The students alleged that the refusal was justified by referring to the clothes worn by the women.

The students further alleged that the hostel gate was closed when they sought to leave for Chatushrungi police station. They raised slogans against the university administration and climbed over the gate before going to the police station.

The protesting students demanded action against the two men, including their suspension, and raised concerns about campus security and hostel entry rules. They also questioned the difference between the late-entry restrictions imposed on women’s hostel residents and those applicable to male students, claiming that the boys’ hostel did not have a comparable in-time requirement.

The university administration’s response to the allegations and the status of any police action were not available at the time of publication.
