Starlink: Airtel and Jio Ink Deals with SpaceX to Launch Next-Gen Satellite Internet in India

Mumbai, 12th March 2025: In a significant development just one day after Bharti Airtel announced its own partnership with SpaceX to bring Starlink broadband to India, Reliance Jio has revealed a similar agreement with the satellite firm. According to a media release, Jio plans to offer Starlink solutions through its extensive network of retail outlets and online storefronts, subject to SpaceX obtaining the necessary approvals to operate in the country.
“Through this agreement, we will leverage our position as the world’s largest mobile operator in data traffic along with Starlink’s leadership in low Earth orbit satellite technology to provide reliable broadband services across India, even in the most remote regions,” said a Jio spokesperson.
“Not only will we offer Starlink equipment at our retail locations, but we will also establish a robust support system for customer service, installation, and activation.”
The move follows a contentious debate over the allocation of spectrum for satellite services in India. While Reliance had advocated for an auction process, the government ultimately opted for an administrative allocation, aligning with global practices and the approach preferred by Elon Musk.
In related news, Bharti Airtel confirmed on Tuesday that it has signed a deal with SpaceX to introduce Starlink in India as well. “Airtel and SpaceX are set to explore the deployment of Starlink equipment across our retail outlets and extend our service offerings to business customers, as well as connect communities, schools, and health centers, even in remote areas,” stated Airtel in a press statement.
Gopal Vittal, Airtel’s Managing Director and Vice Chairman, added, “Partnering with SpaceX to offer next-generation satellite connectivity to our customers is a major milestone that underscores our commitment to advancing digital access across India.”
Both announcements signal a robust push to improve broadband connectivity nationwide, as global investors and tech leaders increasingly recognize the potential of satellite internet to transform the digital landscape in India.
