Pune, 31st January 2025: Three weeks after the outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in Pune, the State Health Department has issued guidelines to address the increasing number of cases. The directive, issued on 29th January by Health Secretaries Dr. Nipun Vinayak and Virendra Singh, outlines measures for disease management, treatment, and the availability of essential medicines.

Since the first reported case on 9th January, the number of GBS patients in the state has climbed to 127, with two fatalities recorded so far. The delay in response had raised concerns, prompting the government to take immediate action.

The issued guidelines emphasize the need for a scientific approach to studying the disease and call for coordination among administrative departments. Districts across the state have been instructed to follow these measures, which include:

– Establishing rapid response teams at the zonal level.
– Ensuring adequate hospital beds and medicine availability.
– Increasing public awareness to prevent misinformation.
– Providing financial assistance for treatment through government schemes.
