Pune, 31st January 2025: The increasing number of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune has raised concerns among citizens. However, data from the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Health Department confirms that GBS cases have been consistently reported in the city. Last year, 185 cases were registered across private and government hospitals.

The surge in cases during January 2025 fueled public anxiety, leading to widespread misconceptions about the condition. In response, the PMC Health Department compiled data from city hospitals covering the period from 1st January 2024 to 31st December 2024. The findings reaffirmed that GBS has been present in Pune, with hospitals continuing to treat patients for the neurological disorder.

Among the hospitals, Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital reported the highest number of cases (32), followed by KEM Hospital (30), Sassoon General Hospital (22), Jupiter Hospital (21), Jehangir Hospital (20), and Bharati Hospital (19). Other hospitals treating GBS patients included Kashibai Navale Hospital (12), Sahyadri Hospital (10), Inlaks Hospital (5), Dr. Sam’s Hospital (4), Ruby Hall Clinic (4), Camp Medical College (2), Sana Hospital (2), Shashwat Hospital (1), and Symbiosis Hospital (1).

According to Dr. Yallapa Jadhav, Medical Superintendent of Sassoon General Hospital, eight deaths due to GBS were reported at the hospital last year. The fatalities occurred across different months—one in January, two in February, two in September, two in November, and one in December.

PMC Health Chief Dr. Nina Borade reassured that GBS cases have been consistently recorded in Pune and emphasized that the condition is not new to the city. The Health Department continues to monitor and compile data to provide clarity and combat misinformation regarding the disease.
