Statewide Strike Over Pune Sub-Registrar Assault Ends After Minister’s Assurance, Rs 200 Crore Revenue Hit

Pune, 21st July 2026: Registration offices across Maharashtra resumed normal operations on Tuesday after an indefinite statewide strike by officers and employees was called off late Monday night following assurances from Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule that those responsible for assaulting a sub-registrar in Pune would be traced and punished.

The strike, called in protest against the alleged assault on Ravindra Koli, co-sub registrar at the Haveli No. 20 document registration office in Pune, had forced all 523 document registration offices across the state to remain shut on Monday. Officials said the closure delayed the registration of around 10,000 to 12,000 property documents and resulted in an estimated Rs 200 crore loss in daily revenue for the state government.

Employee and officers’ associations had earlier declared that they would not withdraw the agitation until all the accused were arrested, prompting the state government to intervene.

According to officials, Koli was allegedly assaulted by a group of lawyers and parties to a property transaction after he refused to register documents in a manner they wanted. He sustained injuries and was admitted to a hospital. The Registration and Stamps Department subsequently lodged a police complaint against the accused.

Following the incident, associations representing registration department employees launched a work boycott. While some registration offices in Pune and Mumbai remained closed over the weekend, all 523 offices across Maharashtra observed a complete shutdown on Monday.

Inspector General of Registration Ravindra Binwade also met Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, urging swift action against those involved in the assault.

Later on Monday, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, speaking to reporters in Nagpur, assured that the accused would be identified and dealt with strictly, irrespective of their identity. Following a meeting between the minister and representatives of the employees’ associations, the indefinite strike was withdrawn, allowing registration offices across the state to resume normal functioning from Tuesday.
