Study Planned to Determine if Urban Heat Islands Formed in Pune’s Koregaon Park, Vadgaonsheri and Lavale

Pune, 20th April 2023: As the summer heat intensifies in Pune, certain areas like Koregaon Park, Magarpatta, Vadgaonsheri, Chinchwad, and Lavale have seen higher temperatures compared to other areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) plans to conduct a study to determine if an urban heat island has been formed in these areas.
The fluctuating weather in Pune has caused concern for citizens. While the summer season has been increasing in intensity since the beginning of April, unseasonal rain and cloudy weather caused the temperature to drop. However, the past two to three days have seen a rise in temperature again, with fluctuations in day and night temperatures, which can impact the efficiency of citizens.
According to data from the Meteorological Department, on April 19, temperatures reached 43.3 degrees Celsius at Koregaon Park, 41.9 degrees Celsius at Vadgaonsheri, 41.5 degrees Celsius at Chinchwad, 40.9 degrees Celsius at Lavale, 40.8 degrees Celsius at Magarpatta, 40 degrees Celsius at Shivajinagar, and 39.6 degrees Celsius at NDA, Pashan.
On April 12, the temperature was 41.9 degrees Celsius at Koregaon Park, 41 degrees Celsius at Vadgaonsheri, 40.1 degrees Celsius at Chinchwad, 39.8 degrees Celsius at Magarpatta, 38.9 degrees Celsius at Pashan, and 38.8 degrees Celsius at Shivajinagar.
On April 8, 37.6 degrees Celsius was recorded at Koregaon Park, 35.6 degrees Celsius at Vadgaonsheri, 35.7 degrees Celsius at Chinchwad, 35 degrees Celsius at Magarpatta, 33.9 degrees Celsius at Pashan, 34.9 degrees Celsius at Shivajinagar, and 34.4 degrees Celsius at NDA.
On April 3, temperatures reached 37.4 degrees Celsius at Vadgaonsheri, 37.7 degrees Celsius at Lavale, 36.6 degrees Celsius at Koregaon Park, 36.4 degrees Celsius at Chinchwad, 36.1 degrees Celsius at Magarpatta, 34.4 degrees Celsius at Pashan, 35.6 degrees Celsius at Shivajinagar, and 35.6 degrees Celsius at NDA.
The average temperature in Pune is around 40 degrees Celsius, and it is important to take caution when the temperature exceeds this limit. The geographical structure of Pune district, which includes hills, forests, reservoirs, cities, and rural areas, can impact temperature fluctuations.
The areas of Vadgaonsheri, Koregaon Park, and Lavale are worth studying to determine why the temperature is higher in these areas. The “urban heat island” factor is typically associated with night temperatures rather than daytime temperatures. A study will provide insight into whether “urban heat islands” have been formed in these areas. Factors like population density, traffic congestion, large-scale constructions, carbon emissions, and concretization can contribute to increasing temperatures.
The Meteorological Department has informed the administration about the heat wave conditions and the planned study. The department aims to convey this information to the public along with the administration.
K. S. Hosalikar, head of IMD Pune, stated that the department plans to conduct the study to understand whether urban heat islands have been formed and the factors contributing to the high temperatures in certain areas of Pune.
