Sugarcane Harvesting Season Begins But 60 Sugar Mills Still Closed In Maharashtra
Pune, 16th November 2022: It has been a month since the sugarcane harvesting season started in the Maharashtra state. Still, only 138 factories have started. About 60 factories are yet to start their fall season. 200 factories were opened in the previous season.
According to the information given by the Sugar Commissionerate, a total of 138 factories have been started in the state, 68 cooperative and 70 private. In previous years, 150 factories were started in the state at this time. This year, 32 factories have been started in Kolhapur Division, 24 in Pune Division, 37 in Solapur Division, 15 in Ahmednagar Division, 11 in Aurangabad Division, 16 in Nanded Division, two in Amravati Division, and only one in Nagpur Division.
Last season, a total of six factories, one each in Wardha, Bhandara, and two each in Yavatmal and Nagpur, were operating. But, this year, three factories have been started, two in the Amravati division and one in the Nagpur division. Four factories in Vidarbha were among the 10 factories that produced the least sugar in the previous season. It includes four sugar mills, namely Manas Agro Industries Unit One Bela (T.Umred) and Venkateswara (Mauda) in Nagpur, Manas Agro Industries Unit Three in Wardha, and Manas Agro Industries Unit Four in Bhandara.
“Vidarbha’s soil water is fertile for sugarcane production. However, unfortunately, the political leaders there did not take the sugar industry very seriously. The sugar industry could not develop in Vidarbha only because of a lack of good leadership. We have run the Sudhakarrao Naik factory at Mahagaon in the Yavatmal district well,” said B. B. Thombre, President of the West Indian Sugar Mills Association (VISMA).
