New Delhi, 8th January 2024: The Supreme Court has issued a stay on the Bombay High Court’s order, which directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to promptly conduct a by-election for the Pune Lok Sabha constituency. The seat has remained vacant since March 29, 2023, following the unfortunate passing of Member of Parliament Girish Bapat.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud has issued a notice on the appeal, stating, “We will lay down the law in March.”

Previously, the High Court had criticized the Election Commission for its delay in conducting the by-election for the Pune Lok Sabha seat after the demise of Girish Bapat.
