Pune, 11th October 2023: Two students from Symbiosis College of Arts & Commerce (SCAC), Ms. Sakshi Thakur and Ms. Shreya Pawar, along with Principal Dr. Hrishikesh Soman and Vice Principal Dr. Tessy Thadathil, presented a research report on “Digital Literacy Among Senior Citizens in India” to the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment. The report was presented to Shri Saurabh Garg, the Secretary of Social Justice and Empowerment, and his team.

The research was conducted over a six-month period as part of a social outreach program under the ‘Symbiosis Social Initiative Programme’ (SSIP), a club focused on social initiatives within the college. The project was supervised by Dr. Tessy Thadathil and mentored by Mr. Rajeev Goel, a visiting faculty member at SCAC. Funding for the project was provided through grants from the Rashtriya Uchchattar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA). Over 100 student volunteers, along with faculty members from SSIP, contributed to the successful completion of the project.

The primary aim of the research was to assess the state of digital literacy among senior citizens in India. The study focused on leveraging technology to promote healthy aging and made several recommendations. These included the creation of an online platform to foster a mutually beneficial environment where youth and senior citizens can exchange knowledge and offer physical and emotional support.

The Secretary and his team expressed their delight with the research findings and showed interest in developing a model based on the group’s recommendations.
