Tata Motors Leads the Charge in CNG Vehicle Innovation and Market Growth

Pune, 21st December 2024: Tata Motors, a trailblazer in India’s automotive sector, continues to solidify its position as a leader in the CNG vehicle segment. With a well-rounded product lineup and strategic growth initiatives, the company has secured an impressive 21.1% market share in the overall CNG segment for the first half of FY2024.
In Maharashtra alone, CNG vehicles accounted for 34% of the brand’s total car sales, highlighting the region’s robust demand for sustainable mobility solutions.
Popular models such as the Tiago, Tigor, Nexon, Altroz, and Punch have been instrumental in driving CNG sales nationally, contributing 22%, 48%, 30%, 32%, and 35%, respectively, to their individual brand sales during H1 FY2024. Among these, the Tata Punch emerged as the best-selling CNG model in Maharashtra, followed by the Nexon, Altroz, Tigor, and Tiago.
The growing adoption of CNG vehicles is supported by a rapidly expanding CNG infrastructure across the country. This infrastructure development has played a pivotal role in driving the segment’s compound annual growth rate (CAGR) and year-on-year (YoY) sales growth.

Nexon iCNG: Redefining the CNG SUV Segment
Launched in September 2024, the Tata Nexon iCNG has set new standards in the SUV market as the first vehicle in India to feature twin-cylinder CNG technology. Powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged engine producing 100 PS of power and 170 Nm of torque, the Nexon iCNG strikes a perfect balance between performance and efficiency. The innovative twin-cylinder design optimizes space, offering a remarkable 321 litres of boot capacity, setting it apart from competitors.
With premium features like ventilated leatherette seats, a 10.25-inch Harman infotainment system, a panoramic sunroof, automatic climate control, and an air purifier, the Nexon iCNG delivers a seamless and luxurious driving experience.
Punch iCNG: Dominating the Sub-Compact SUV Market
Introduced in August 2023, the Tata Punch iCNG has revolutionized the sub-compact SUV category, achieving an astounding 83% YoY growth. It currently commands a dominant 68% market share in this segment for FY2024.
The Punch iCNG boasts India’s first twin-cylinder CNG setup, ensuring no compromise on boot space. Features like direct CNG mode start and a 5-star GNCAP safety rating make it a favorite among Indian consumers. The introduction of the CNG variant has driven a 30% incremental growth in overall Punch sales, cementing its position as a market leader.
Altroz iCNG: Redefining Premium Hatchbacks
Since its launch in May 2023, the Altroz iCNG has garnered widespread acclaim, driving an 11% growth in brand sales. Known for its 5-star Global NCAP safety rating, the Altroz combines innovation and practicality with its twin-cylinder CNG technology.
Packed with advanced features like a voice-assisted electric sunroof, wireless charging, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and a 360-degree camera, the Altroz iCNG caters to customers seeking premium, sustainable mobility solutions.
Tiago and Tigor iCNG: A Milestone in Sustainable Mobility
First introduced in January 2022 and upgraded in August 2023, the Tiago and Tigor iCNG models feature twin-cylinder technology for uncompromised boot space. Additionally, in February 2024, these vehicles became the first CNG models in India to offer AMT (automated manual transmission) technology.
Equipped with standout features such as direct CNG mode start, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, reverse parking camera, LED DRLs, and automatic climate control, these models offer exceptional value. They also remain the only offerings in their segment to provide three powertrain options: petrol, electric, and iCNG.
