Lonavala, 25th July 2025: Vehicular movement towards Mumbai was disrupted on Friday evening after a minor landslide near the Amrutanjan Bridge in the Khandala Ghat section of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The incident occurred around 6 pm amid continuous heavy rainfall in the Lonavala-Khandala and Raigad regions. In the last 12 hours till 6 pm, the Lonavala region received 78 mm of rainfall.

According to officials, soil, along with trees and bushes, slid onto the expressway, partially blocking the Mumbai-bound lane. Responding swiftly, teams from the Borghat Highway Police and IRB Infrastructure rushed to the spot and began clearance operations.

To facilitate the removal of debris, one lane heading towards Mumbai was temporarily closed, causing a brief traffic slowdown. However, by 7:30 pm, the road was cleared and traffic was fully restored.

While no large boulders or rocks were reported to have fallen in this incident, the loose soil and vegetation posed a risk to commuters.

Officials attributed the incident to persistent rainfall in the ghat region since Thursday night, which likely loosened the soil along the slopes.

In the past, the Khandala Ghat stretch has witnessed several landslides, prompting the installation of safety nets and preventive infrastructure along vulnerable zones. These measures had effectively curtailed major rockfall incidents in recent years.

Commuters and local residents have urged authorities to implement additional safety precautions, especially during the monsoon, to prevent soil erosion or mudslides from disrupting traffic and risking lives.

No injuries were reported in Friday’s incident. Authorities are continuing to monitor the area for any further signs of instability.
