Pune, 11th July 2025: The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Mahametro) has received bids from six companies for the much-anticipated Swargate to Katraj Metro extension. The route, aimed at decongesting one of Pune’s busiest road corridors, has now moved a step closer to implementation.

The tender submission process concluded recently, and Mahametro will now begin technical and financial evaluations of the participating firms. The company meeting all the prescribed criteria will be selected to execute the project. The entire scrutiny and selection process is expected to take around two to three months.

“Six companies responded by the tender deadline. Now, our committee will assess the proposals based on technical and financial eligibility. The final appointment will be made after that, following necessary procedures,” said Hemant Sonawane, Executive Director of Mahametro.

The extended metro corridor will cover the high-traffic Swargate to Katraj stretch, which includes densely populated areas such as Bibvewadi, Dhankawadi, Padmavati, and Balajinagar. The route currently suffers from chronic traffic congestion, frequent accidents, and high pollution levels due to the narrow roads and heavy vehicle flow.

Once operational, the metro extension is expected to significantly ease commuting challenges for residents of Undri, Pisoli, Dhankawadi, Balajinagar, and Bibvewadi. It is also being seen as a key step towards promoting sustainable and eco-friendly urban transport in Pune.
