Tree Mafia Threat in Pune? Citizen Appeals for Urgent PMC Audit

Kondhwa, 8th March 2025: Concerned about the increasing tree cutting by the alleged “tree mafia” in Pune, city resident Jaymala Dhankikar has written to Maharashtra Chief Minister, urging immediate action. In her letter, she has requested the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) to direct the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to conduct a comprehensive audit of roadside trees, particularly in the NIBM Annexe area.
Speaking to Punekar News, Dhankikar emphasized the need for strict vigilance. “Illegal tree cutting is a serious issue that threatens Pune’s green cover. We need accountability, and the first step is a systematic audit of all roadside trees,” she said.
She has proposed a detailed action plan for the PMC, including:
- Counting and Geo-Tagging: Each tree should be recorded and geo-tagged for better monitoring.
- Tree Mapping: A detailed map should be created, identifying the location, species, and health of all roadside trees.
- Increased Vigilance: PMC’s Garden Department must remain alert and take immediate action against unauthorized tree felling.
Highlighting specific areas that need urgent attention, Dhankikar pointed out that trees along the Anandvan Gate to Raheja Premiere stretch and Dorabjee Restaurant to Kingston Atlantis should be prioritized for auditing.
“If the authorities act swiftly, we can prevent further destruction of trees and safeguard Pune’s environment,” she added.
The letter calls for the PMC to expedite the process and ensure strict enforcement of environmental laws. As of now, there has been no official response from the Chief Minister’s Office or the PMC regarding the demand.
