Deccan, 21st June 2025: Two police constables have been suspended for allegedly threatening and extorting ₹20,000 from a young man who was chatting with his girlfriend in a parked car. The incident took place on Tuesday night (June 17) near the Law College Road in Pune.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1), Nikhil Pingle, issued the suspension orders against the accused personnel—Ganesh Tatyasaheb Desai and Yogesh Narayan Sutar—after a preliminary inquiry revealed serious misconduct. Both were attached to the night patrol team (COP24) in the area.

According to the complaint filed by the youth at the Deccan Police Station, he and his girlfriend were sitting in a car on Damle Path near Law College Road when the two constables approached them during their night patrol. They allegedly threatened the youth with police action and demanded ₹20,000 to “settle” the matter without taking them to the police station.

The complainant was then allegedly taken on a two-wheeler to an ATM near Kamala Nehru Park, where the money was withdrawn and handed over to the police personnel. Disturbed and frightened by the incident, the youth and his girlfriend later approached Deccan Police Station and filed a formal complaint.

Senior Police Inspector Girisha Nimbalkar, in-charge of Deccan police station, initiated an internal inquiry and submitted a detailed report to DCP Pingle. It was found that the two policemen did not report the incident to their superiors, as is mandatory in such cases.

Based on the report, DCP Pingle stated that the actions of the accused policemen had brought disrepute to the police department and violated professional conduct. He promptly ordered their suspension.

Further departmental and legal action is likely as the investigation continues.
