Two Pune Policemen Suspended for Attempting to Extort College Student Chatting with Friend

Yerawada, 6th May 2025: In Pune, two Yerawada Police Constables have been suspended after allegedly threatening a college student with criminal charges for talking with his female friend and demanding Rs 50,000 to drop the case. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 4) Himmat Jadhav ordered the suspension of Constables Dayanand Shivaji Kadam and Ashwin Ishwar Dethe following an internal inquiry that found their conduct to be undisciplined, inappropriate, and damaging to the police department’s reputation.
The incident occurred on 24th April, when the officers approached the student and his friend, who had stopped to chat near a company road in Yerawada. Accusing them of indecent behavior in their vehicle, the officers threatened to file a case unless the student paid Rs 50,000. Distressed, the student-who was visiting a doctor in the area-reported the matter to Yerawada Police Station. Senior Inspector Ravindra Shelke conducted a preliminary investigation, which led to a detailed probe by DCP Jadhav.
The inquiry confirmed the extortion attempt, prompting immediate suspension of both officers. The case has now been handed over to Senior Inspector Sarjerao Kumbhar of Lonikand Police Station for further investigation. Pune City Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar has emphasized that such misconduct will not be tolerated and has ordered strict action to preserve public trust in law enforcement.
