Union Cabinet Approves Pune Metro Phase-2: Line 4 and 4A to Boost City’s Public Transport Network
New Delhi/Pune, 26th November 2025: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved two new corridors under Phase-2 of the Pune Metro project—Line 4 (Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla) and Line 4A (Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug). These are the second major projects sanctioned under Phase-2, following earlier approvals for Line 2A (Vanaz–Chandani Chowk) and Line 2B (Ramwadi–Wagholi/Vitthalwadi).
Spanning a combined 31.636 km with 28 elevated stations, the new lines aim to connect IT hubs, commercial centres, educational institutions, and residential areas across East, South, and West Pune. The project is expected to be completed within five years at an estimated cost of Rs 9857.85 crore, funded jointly by the Union and state governments and external bilateral or multilateral agencies.
Line 4 and 4A are part of Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan and will integrate with existing and planned metro lines at Kharadi Bypass, Nal Stop (Line 2), and Swargate (Line 1). Interchanges at Hadapsar Railway Station and future corridors towards Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road will ensure smooth connectivity across metro, rail, and bus networks.
The corridors cover key areas including Kharadi IT Park, Khadakwasla tourist belt, Hadapsar industrial hub, and Warje residential clusters, traversing major roads such as Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, and the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway. The project is expected to ease congestion on busy routes, improve commuter safety, and promote environmentally sustainable urban transport.
Ridership Projections:
Daily ridership on Line 4 and 4A is projected to reach 4.09 lakh passengers by 2028, growing to nearly 7 lakh by 2038, 9.63 lakh by 2048, and over 11.7 lakh by 2058. The Kharadi–Khadakwasla corridor alone is expected to carry 3.23 lakh passengers in 2028, increasing to 9.33 lakh by 2058, while the Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug spur will see growth from 85,555 to 2.41 lakh passengers over the same period.
The project will be executed by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), handling all civil, electrical, mechanical, and systems works. Pre-construction activities, including surveys and detailed design consultancy, are already underway.
Once completed, Pune Metro’s network will exceed 100 km, marking a milestone in the city’s journey towards a modern, integrated, and sustainable urban transport system. The new corridors are expected to reduce travel time, ease traffic congestion, and provide residents with a safe, reliable, and affordable commuting option, cementing the metro’s role as the backbone of Pune’s urban mobility for decades to come.
