Unvaccinated Children More Susceptible To COVID-19 In Pune

Pune, 31st March 2023: Pune district in Maharashtra has witnessed a surge in Covid-19 cases with a high test positivity rate compared to the state average. The spread of the XBB.1.1.16 Variant of Covid-19 in the community is on the rise, leading to a surge in cases.

The positivity rate of Covid-19 cases in the state has risen from 1.05% four weeks ago to 6.15% between March 22 and 28, according to the state health department. Nine Covid-19 patients, including eight children, have been admitted to Sassoon General Hospital. Two patients are in serious condition and receiving high-flow oxygen in the ICU.

As most of the children are unvaccinated, symptoms are more evident among them. Pune City has been the worst affected by the pandemic since the beginning of the fresh outbreak, reporting 160 fresh Covid-19 cases on Thursday out of which 78 are from PMC, and 41 are from Pimpri-Chinchwad.
