Pune, 3rd January 2026: The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has recorded a substantial rise in revenue following the rapid adoption of UPI-based digital payments for ticketing, with nearly Rs 300 crore earned between September and December 2025, officials said.

Data released by MSRTC shows that commuters are increasingly using platforms such as PhonePe and Google Pay to purchase bus tickets, significantly reducing reliance on cash transactions across the state-run transport network.

The growth trajectory began in September 2025, when 49.79 lakh tickets were booked through UPI, generating Rs 64 crore in revenue. Digital collections continued to climb in October, touching Rs 77.32 crore, followed by Rs 78.66 crore in November.

The highest monthly earnings were recorded in December 2025, when over 62.59 lakh UPI-based ticket transactions resulted in revenue of Rs 83.67 crore, marking the peak of digital collections during the four months.

MSRTC officials attributed the surge to the widespread availability of UPI payment facilities at bus depots, ticket counters, and directly with conductors during journeys. The shift has eased ticketing operations by saving time, reducing the need for exact change, and minimising disputes between conductors and passengers.

Authorities also pointed out that increased use of digital payments has helped curb revenue leakage by improving transparency and preventing cash misappropriation. The UPI-based system has strengthened accountability and streamlined daily revenue reconciliation, officials added.

With passenger confidence in digital payments continuing to grow, MSRTC officials said they expect UPI transactions to increase further in the coming months, contributing to improved efficiency, transparency, and revenue stability across the public transport system.
