US Supreme Court Approves Extradition Of Tahawwur Rana To India In 26/11 Case

New Delhi/Washington, 25th January 2025: The US Supreme Court has approved the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, an accused in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, to India. This decision comes after a writ petition filed by Rana in November last year was denied a day after Donald Trump assumed office as US president on January 21.
India’s request for Rana’s extradition received backing from the US government, which had urged the Supreme Court to reject his petition for a “writ of certiorari.” A Canadian citizen of Pakistani descent, Rana had sought to block his extradition to India. However, US Solicitor General Elizabeth B. Prelogar filed a response on December 16, urging the court to deny his appeal.
Rana had previously challenged his extradition in lower courts, including the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco. In August, the Ninth Circuit ruled in favour of Rana’s extradition, stating that it aligns with the India-US Extradition Treaty.
Rana is known to have ties with David Coleman Headley, a Pakistani-American terrorist and key conspirator in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. The coordinated terror assault, executed by 10 Pakistani terrorists, resulted in the deaths of 166 individuals, including six Americans, and involved a 60-hour siege at multiple locations across Mumbai.
