New Delhi/Srinagar, 11thJune 2026: The Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express will receive a commercial stoppage at Anantnag following discussions between Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on railway infrastructure and connectivity projects in the Union Territory.
The decision was taken during a meeting held in New Delhi, where both leaders reviewed ongoing and proposed railway initiatives in Jammu and Kashmir. The new halt at Anantnag is expected to improve rail access for passengers travelling to and from south Kashmir.
According to officials, the stoppage will be introduced on the Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, one of the region’s flagship passenger services. Anantnag is a major urban and commercial centre in Kashmir and serves as an important gateway for surrounding districts.
During the meeting, Omar Abdullah highlighted the impact of recent railway developments on transportation within Jammu and Kashmir. He noted that the Vande Bharat service has reduced travel time between Jammu and Srinagar and has become a key mode of travel for residents and visitors.
The discussions also focused on freight transportation and the role of the railway network in supporting economic activity across the region. Particular emphasis was placed on the movement of agricultural produce, including apples and cherries, as well as industrial goods such as cement. Officials said the expansion of rail connectivity has improved logistics and transportation options for producers and businesses.
Ashwini Vaishnaw reiterated the Centre’s focus on railway infrastructure development in Jammu and Kashmir during the meeting. The minister stated that the decision to provide a commercial halt at Anantnag was taken in response to local transportation requirements and demand for improved connectivity.
The timeline for implementation of the new stoppage was not immediately announced.
