Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja Breaks Records in China, Becomes First 100 Crore Grosser in Overseas Market!
Mumbai, 14th December 2024:Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja is having a wonderful run at the Chinese box office. This Tamil action thriller released on November 29, 2024, has gained much attention with its gripping storyline and produced remarkable box office results. After a spectacular opening weekend, during which Maharaja collected Rs 4.60 crore (USD 0.54 million), the film has continued well in China, though it has dropped a bit after Day 9. On Day 13, the total collection stands at Rs 2.30 crore (USD 0.27 million), and the total collection in China has crossed Rs 71.50 crore. Continued success at the box office could mean that the movie would become a record-breaker in the Chinese market for Indian films.
More astonishing, however, is the cumulative performance of the film. With the domestic (India) net collection already at Rs 72.43 crore and overseas earnings at a whopping Rs 95.45 crore, Maharaja’s worldwide total stands at Rs 178.95 crore. That puts it in a great position to outpace many other major Indian films at the global box office. Pushpa 2 (Rs 71.50 crore) and other hit Tamil films such as Master and Beast had already done so well in China, but Maharaja is well on its way to leaving them behind. The film has now become the first to register a feat rarely achieved — its gross overseas earnings have reached the Rs 100-crore mark, which includes Rs 76 crore from China. This makes Maharaja the first film of Vijay Sethupathi to achieve this landmark in the overseas market, leaving behind stars like Ajith Kumar and Sivakarthikeyan in terms of foreign box office success. Directed by Nithilan Saminathan, the movie narrates the riveting tale of a father’s relentless quest for justice against his brutal attack on his daughter.
It turns out to be an intriguing twist, adding the plot depth that makes it an emotional thriller film. Starring Vijay Sethupathi in the lead along with Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Sachana Namidass, among others. The film was made on a modest budget of Rs 20 crore, and its blockbuster status in India and China proves the immense potential of Indian films in international markets. As it continues to rake in impressive figures in China, it’s clear that Vijay Sethupathi’s global appeal is on the rise, and the movie is well on its way to achieving even greater success in the weeks to come.
