Vintage Fiats roll out on Pune–Mahabaleshwar rally, blending nostalgia with motoring passion
Pune, 21st February 2026: A convoy of gleaming vintage cars drew attention across city roads as the Fiat Classic Car Club of India organized a classic car rally from Pune to Mahabaleshwar on Saturday, showcasing more than 20 meticulously preserved Fiat models dating back to 1955.
With chrome trim, rounded body lines, hand-gear systems, classic grilles, and distinctive headlamps, the cars offered residents a glimpse into automotive history. Commuters paused to photograph the convoy as it passed through the scenic route, turning the rally into a moving exhibition of vintage engineering.
Participants said maintaining the vehicles in their original condition required patience and dedication, but the experience of driving them made the effort worthwhile. Many owners have preserved their cars for decades, often as family heirlooms.
One of the organizers, Sanjay Prakash Dhere, said the initiative aimed to promote preservation of automotive heritage and spark interest among younger generations. He added that club members regularly undertake drives to destinations such as Goa, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Kanyakumari. Speaking about his own vehicle, Dhere said it once belonged to his father, and driving it gives him a sense of emotional connection and nostalgia.
Participant Sheetal Sonkambale, who owns a 1991 Fiat, described her car as “a repository of family memories rather than just a vehicle”. She said maintaining the car personally and showcasing it in rallies brings joy, while the curiosity and appreciation of onlookers remain the biggest reward.
The rally concluded in Mahabaleshwar, with enthusiasts exchanging restoration stories and technical insights, underscoring how vintage motoring continues to thrive through community-driven efforts.
