Pune, 25th December 2024: A horrific accident near Kesnand Phata in Wagholi on Monday night claimed three lives and left six others seriously injured when a speeding dumper ran over people sleeping on the footpath. Among the deceased were two young children and their uncle, while three of the injured are in critical condition.

The incident occurred when the dumper driver, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, lost control of the vehicle and veered onto the footpath. Pune police have arrested the driver and are investigating further.

The injured were rushed to Sassoon General Hospital, where 19-year-old Janaki Pawar remains in critical condition. According to doctors, the impact of the accident caused her intestines to shift into her upper abdominal cavity near the lungs, leading to breathing difficulties. Her trachea was also torn. A complex surgery was performed to reposition her intestines and repair the trachea, but she remains on a ventilator in the Trauma Department.

“On Tuesday, we attempted to remove the ventilator to check for independent breathing, but she was unable to sustain it on her own. We have reconnected the ventilator,” a hospital source said.

Another victim, 18-year-old Renisha Pawar, suffered a spinal injury but is now stable. 20-year-old Nagesh Pawar, also injured in the accident, is expected to be discharged within the next two days.

Three other victims—seven-year-old Roshan Bhosale, 18-year-old Sudarshan Vairat, and 50-year-old Alisha Pawar—are being treated for leg injuries and fractures in the Orthopaedic Department. Their condition is reported to be stable.

Following the incident, Chief Minister’s Office contacted Sassoon Superintendent Dr. Eknath Pawar to inquire about the victims’ treatment and recovery. The Chief Minister has assured financial assistance from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for any further medical expenses.
