Water Pipeline Bursts During Pune Metro Work in Shivajinagar

Pune, 12th May 2025: A major water pipeline supplying Shivajinagar burst this afternoon near the Simla Office during ongoing metro construction work, leading to significant water wastage. The metro team quickly initiated repairs and managed to stop the leak.
The incident occurred around 3 PM when a JCB machine, engaged in metro construction, accidentally hit the pipeline. The impact caused water to gush 10 to 12 feet into the air, resulting in the loss of a large volume of water before the leak could be contained. The affected pipeline, connected to the Camp Water Centre, is responsible for supplying water to areas like Ganeshkhind Road and the old Mumbai-Pune highway.
Although the pipeline burst caused temporary concern, the traffic in the area remained unaffected as the road near the breakage point was already closed for metro work. Metro authorities informed Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials immediately, and repair work was initiated without delay.
The incident comes at a time when the city is already grappling with water shortages. Residents have been facing low pressure and delayed water supply, prompting a surge in demand for both municipal and private water tankers. As a result, citizens are spending thousands of rupees to meet daily water needs.
Despite the disruption, Superintendent Engineer Prasanna Raghav Joshi confirmed that the overall water supply to the city has not been impacted. He stated that a smaller pipeline connected to the main Camp line was damaged, and the leak was swiftly addressed by metro personnel.
