Wearing Mask Made Compulsory In Maharashtra As COVID Cases On The Rise

Pune, 4th June 2022: After a huge surge in the Covid-19 cases in the past few days, the Maharashtra Government has reintroduced compulsory masks in the state.

The revised strategy was released as the state experienced its highest number of deaths since April 26 (three in Pune, Solapur, and Beed). On Friday, over 1,000 cases of Covid-19 were reported for the third day (1,134), with 763 in Mumbai.

This declaration of mandatory masks in public, except in open areas, is a part of a strategic plan that includes increasing testing, ensuring bed availability, and conducting genomic testing. All of this is done in order to control the rising outbreak and keep hospitalizations rate to a minimum.

The growing numbers prompted Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan to send a letter to the state government warning of a near-doubling of cases in six districts in less than a week. The districts include Mumbai city and suburbs, Pune, Palghar, Raigad, and Thane.

While instances throughout Maharashtra jumped from 2,471 to 4,883 in the week between May 27 and June 3, the Covid tally in Mumbai increased by double in the same period, according to Bhushan.

He also wrote to the health secretaries of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Karnataka, expressing concern about the escalating trend and urging them to return to the basics of testing, tracking, treating, and vaccinating people.
