Pune, 25th June 2023: After a delay of almost three weeks, the monsoon rains have finally arrived in Pune, bringing light to moderate showers since Saturday (24th). This wet weather is expected to continue until Wednesday (28th). The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also predicted heavy rainfall in the Ghatmathya area of Pune district during this period.

The progress of the monsoon was hindered by Cyclone Biperjoy, which recently crossed the Arabian Sea. However, after the cyclone receded last week, favorable conditions paved the way for the monsoon’s advancement. Within 24 hours on Saturday, the monsoon covered 90 percent of the country, including Maharashtra, in a rare occurrence.

Pune city has witnessed continuous rainfall over the past 48 hours, and this pattern is expected to persist for the next four days. Residents of Pune are advised to carry raincoats and umbrellas when going outdoors. Some selected areas may experience moderate to heavy rainfall.

So far, 34.9 millimeters of rain has been recorded in the Pune area this season, whereas the average rainfall by this time should be around 123.3 mm. There is currently a deficit of 88.4 mm compared to the average, but it is expected to reduce in the final week.

Pashan has reported the highest rainfall in Pune city since the onset of the monsoon on Saturday. As of Sunday morning, 21.1 mm of rain was recorded in the past 24 hours at Pashan. On Saturday, the city received an average rainfall of 14 millimeters. Although Sunday’s rainfall was slightly lower than Saturday’s, an average of 6.4 millimeters of rain fell during the day.

Precautions to be taken:

  • Avoid traveling to hilly areas for tourism
  • Drivers should exercise caution on slippery roads, watch out for potholes and standing water
  • Seek shelter in a safe place during heavy rainfall
