Pune, 28th August 2023: Pune’s climate has taken an erratic turn lately, oscillating between fleeting drizzles, overcast skies, and intermittent bursts of sunlight. This climatic shift has resulted in a surge of patients experiencing fever and shivering, as noted by local medical experts.

Medical professionals in the city have reported a rising number of cases involving not only conjunctivitis but also cold, cough, and fever among the populace. The fluctuations in weather have been attributed to a rise in vector-borne and water-borne diseases. Over the past month, patients with symptoms like cold, headache, fever, cough, and shivering have notably increased. Dr. Dattatreya Kadam, a practicing physician, shared, “The influx of patients at my clinic has doubled. What used to be around 150-200 visits a day has surged considerably, prompting me to extend my clinic hours from early mornings to late evenings.”

Dr. Sachin Gandhi emphasized the importance of regular immunization for children, acknowledging that some youngsters might experience fever as a reaction to vaccines. He advised parents not to panic and to administer medicines according to medical guidance. Despite the recent upswing in patients with fever, cold, and cough, most cases have been successfully managed in the outpatient department. Hospitalizations have been limited.

Addressing the demographics most affected, Dr. Sagar Mane pointed out that children and individuals aged 15 to 24 are particularly vulnerable. He stated, “Children’s bodies are more sensitive to abrupt weather changes, making them prone to illnesses. High fever followed by cough and cold, classic indicators of dengue, often afflict them. Additionally, this age group’s prolonged outdoor activities expose them to mosquito bites and dengue infections.”

The escalating number of patients can be attributed to several factors. The combination of occasional rain and bright sunshine has led to the proliferation of viral infections. Stagnant water in the surroundings has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which transmit diseases like dengue and chikungunya. Contaminated water and food have also triggered stomach-related issues.

To counteract the surge in illnesses, health experts have recommended several precautionary measures:

Consider taking an anti-flu vaccine.
Refrain from sending unwell children to school.

Maintain proper hydration by drinking ample water.

Consume fresh and nutritious food.
Avoid self-medication and seek professional medical advice.

In light of these evolving health concerns, Pune’s residents are advised to remain vigilant and prioritize their well-being during these weather fluctuations.
