Reported By Amit Singh
Pune, 10th January 2025: WhatsApp, the leading messaging platform, revealed in its latest transparency report for November 2024 that it banned 9,629,000 accounts in India. Of these, 1,389,000 accounts were proactively banned even before user reports, showcasing the platform’s emphasis on preventive measures against abuse.
The report, published under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, outlines actions taken against violations of laws and the platform’s Terms of Service. The bans stemmed from WhatsApp’s robust abuse detection systems, which evaluate accounts during registration, messaging, and user feedback phases.
Grievance Reports Received
WhatsApp also addressed 7,103 grievances from Indian users during the period, including:
– Ban appeals: 3,052 reports (24 accounts actioned)
– Other support issues: 2,934 reports (55 accounts actioned)
– Safety concerns: 785 reports (no accounts actioned due to procedural responses guiding users to report issues via the app).
The remaining categories, including account support and product support, received negligible action due to non-violative requests.
Grievance Appellate Committee Compliance
Additionally, WhatsApp complied with three orders from the Grievance Appellate Committee, reinforcing its adherence to regulatory guidelines.
