WhatsApp Blocked More Than 16.6 Lakh Accounts Banned In India

Pune, 1st June 2022: WhatsApp today said that it has banned more than 16.6 lakh accounts in India in the month of April in compliance with the new IT Rules 2021.

The platform banned over 18 lakh such accounts in the country in March.

WhatsApp also reported that the company received 844 grievance reports in April within the country. Whereas, in March, WhatsApp received 597 grievance reports.

A WhatsApp spokesperson said, “This user-safety report includes details of user complaints and related actions taken by WhatsApp as well as details of WhatsApp’s own preventive actions to combat abuse on our platform As recorded in the latest monthly report, WhatsApp has banned more than 1.6 million accounts in the month of April.”

The company said the data shared highlights the number of Indian accounts banned by WhatsApp between April 1-30 using an abuse-detection approach, including negative feedback it received from users through its “report” feature. Actions taken to move forward are also included.

“Over the years, we have continuously invested in Artificial Intelligence and another cutting edge technology, data scientists and experts and processes to keep our users safe on our platform,” the company said.

Under the new IT Rules 2021, large digital and social media platforms with more than 5 million users will have to publish a monthly compliance report.
