Pune, 9th June 2023: WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform, has introduced a new High Definition (HD) image sharing feature with the aim of enhancing user experience and addressing concerns about reduced image quality during sharing.

The latest upgrade, part of a series of recent updates to the stable version of WhatsApp, includes features like chat lock, polls, multi-device support, new chat layouts, screen sharing, and the introduction of usernames. The HD image sharing feature allows users to send high-quality photos to their contacts. When attempting to share a large image file, users will see an HD-quality icon displayed on the photo-sharing window. By tapping on the icon, users can choose between standard or HD image quality.

Currently, the HD option is only available in the beta versions of WhatsApp for Android and iOS, and it is visible when sharing a large file. The specific size that qualifies as “large” is yet to be clarified, and it remains unknown when the stable version of the app will receive this feature.

It’s important to note a few considerations with this update. While WhatsApp still applies some image compression, the HD image sharing feature allows for significantly enhanced image quality compared to the standard option. Users need to manually select the HD option each time they wish to share a large image file, as the default setting remains “Standard quality.” Shared photos in HD quality will be identified with a special tag. However, this feature does not extend to video sharing, and users will need to use the document option to share higher quality videos. Additionally, the HD image sharing feature does not apply to photos shared in status updates.
