WhatsApp To Introduce Feature For Selecting Auto Download Quality Of Media

New Delhi, 20th April 2025: WhatsApp, the world’s leading instant messaging platform, is developing a new feature that will allow users to select the quality of photos and videos that are automatically downloaded to their devices. This update aims to give users greater control over data usage and storage management, addressing a long-standing demand from millions of users worldwide. The feature is currently under development and is expected to roll out in upcoming updates for both Android and iOS devices, according to sources familiar with WhatsApp’s product roadmap.
The new auto-download quality selection feature will enable users to choose whether they want media files such as photos and videos downloaded in high, standard, or data-saver quality. Currently, WhatsApp automatically downloads media based on network settings, but users have limited control over the quality of these downloads. This often leads to unnecessary consumption of storage space and mobile data, especially for users who are part of multiple group chats where large media files are frequently shared.
According to a Mumbai-based digital analyst, “This move by WhatsApp is a direct response to user feedback. Many people have complained about their phone storage filling up quickly due to high-resolution images and videos being downloaded automatically. Allowing users to set their preferred download quality will make WhatsApp more user-friendly and efficient.” He added that this feature will be particularly useful in countries like India, where data costs and storage limitations are significant concerns for many users.
The feature is expected to be accessible through WhatsApp’s ‘Storage and Data’ settings. Users will likely see new options under the ‘Media auto-download’ section, where they can set preferences for photos, videos, audio, and documents separately. For example, users might choose to auto-download photos in standard quality while opting for high quality only when connected to Wi-Fi. This granular control will help users manage their device storage more effectively and avoid unnecessary data charges.
Industry experts believe that introducing such customisation options will further strengthen WhatsApp’s position in the competitive messaging app market. With rivals like Telegram and Signal already offering advanced media management features, WhatsApp’s move is seen as an effort to retain its vast user base and enhance user satisfaction. “Customisable auto-download settings are a step in the right direction for WhatsApp, especially as digital communication becomes increasingly media-rich,” said a Delhi-based technology consultant.
The company has not yet announced an official release date for the feature, but early reports suggest it is being tested in beta versions of the app. Once available, users will be able to update their app and access the new settings without any additional cost. WhatsApp is also expected to provide guidance within the app to help users understand and configure the new options easily.
