Pune, 5th January 2025: The city woke up to a biting winter chill on Saturday morning as minimum temperatures dipped to single digits at several locations, marking the coldest morning in the past two weeks. This sudden drop comes after a relatively warmer second half of December.

At least six locations in Pune district reported minimum temperatures below 10°C. Haveli recorded the lowest temperature at 8°C, followed by Shivajinagar at 9.6°C and Talegaon at 9.8°C. Other areas, including the NDA campus (8.7°C), Baramati (9.2°C), and Shirur (9.2°C), also experienced single-digit temperatures.

The chilly spell is the first in January 2025 and mirrors similar conditions seen in mid-December 2024. Meteorologists attributed the temperature drop to typical seasonal patterns, suggesting that the mercury could rise in the coming days.

“The current cold wave in Pune and nearby regions, including parts of Deccan Maharashtra, is caused by an anti-cyclonic system over central India,” explained Abhijit Modak, an independent weather forecaster. “This system, coupled with clear skies and dry air, creates the perfect conditions for temperatures to plummet.”

Modak also pointed out that this weather phenomenon is not unusual for this time of year. “We observed a similar pattern during the first half of December. While it feels colder now, we expect temperatures to gradually increase as the week progresses,” he added.
