Wisteria CHS Powers Ahead with Smart 30 kW Solar Plant with Self-Cleaning System on National Energy Conservation Day

Pune, 15 December 2025: On the o ccasion of National Energy Conservation Day, Wisteria Cooperative Housing Society (CHS) at Keshavnagar, Mundhwa, inaugurated a 30 kW rooftop solar electricity power plant equipped with a self-cleaning system, setting a strong example of how housing societies can adopt clean energy through practical innovation and collective decision-making.

The solar plant is expected to generate approximately 130–140 units of electricity per day and around 50,000 units annually, helping the society reduce its electricity
bills by nearly ₹1 lakh per month. With a projected payback period of 18–20 months, the project converts a portion of the society’s idle Fixed Deposits into a productive, long-term infrastructure asset, benefiting all residents rather using interest in beautification or amenity enhancements.

Small contribution by Wisteria in Environment.

The solar installation is expected to deliver:
Generate ~50,000 units of clean & green electricity annually
Reduce ~40 tonnes of COemissions per year
Save the ~2,000 trees annually (carbon absorption)
Avoid burning ~20 tonnes of coal

Tackling the Dust Dilemma
One of the most common yet overlooked challenges in rooftop solar installations is dust accumulation on panels, which can reduce energy output by 15–30% if not
cleaned regularly—especially in urban environments.

To tackle this, Wisteria CHS installed a selfcleaning sprinkler watering system that periodically sprays water over the panels to remove dust and bird droppings. This low-cost, low-maintenance solution ensures consistent power generation without dependence on daily manual cleaning.

While manual wipers are still required for periodic deep cleaning, the society also evaluated fully automated wiper-based cleaning systems. Considering the
higher initial and maintenance costs, automation has been kept on hold for now, with provisions made for future upgrades as feasibility and budgets allow. The sprinkler system delivers immediate efficiency gains with optimal cost control.

Modern Technology with Local Execution

The project uses latest-generation TOPCon (N-type) solar panels, which offer 2–3% higher efficiency, better low-light performance, and lower degradationcompared to conventional mono or bifacial panels—making them well suited for Indian climatic conditions, including monsoon and winter seasons.

In line with the “Local Be Vocal” philosophy, Wisteria CHS partnered with Equinox Solar, a local vendor, demonstrating that advanced technology and local
entrepreneurship can successfully coexist.

The mounting structure is made of Galvanized Iron (GI), providing zinc-based corrosion protection for long-term durability. Additional steps, including white/reflective terrace paint, are planned to further enhance power generation by improving reflected light from the surface beneath the panels.

Managing Society-Level Challenges

Unlike individual home installations, solar projects in large housing societies face challenges such as budget approvals, space constraints, differing member
priorities, and limited participation in meetings. With terrace space already partly occupied by solar water heaters, Wisteria CHS navigated these constraints through multiple General Body and Committee meetings, evaluation of more than a dozen vendor quotations, and careful techno-commercial comparisons.

The project also faced panel shortages and meter availability delays, which were resolved through persistent coordination and planning.

Science Meets Culture & Tradition

Reflecting the society’s values, the solar plant was inaugurated with traditional puja and aarti, symbolizing the integration of modern science with Indian culture, rather than a conventional ribbon & cake-cutting ceremony.

Future Expansion Plans

Encouraged by the success of this installation, Wisteria CHS is evaluating a larger solar expansion aimed at providing approximately 100 units per flat per monthusing a peer-to-peer (P2P) energy model, subject to feasibility studies, space
availability, and government policies.

“This project proves that with patience, teamwork, and the right technology, housing societies can achieve energy independence while contributing meaningfully to climate action,” society office-bearers said.
