Pune, 14th March 2025: In a first, women employees of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have been assigned the task of collecting pending property tax arrears. A total of 60 women employees, divided into 12 teams, have been deployed for this initiative. The move was announced by Madhav Jagtap, Deputy Commissioner of PMC’s Tax Collection Department, on the occasion of Women’s Day.

The Municipal Corporation has been given a target of ₹2,800 crore for the 2024-25 financial year. However, with only half of March remaining, the department has managed to collect just ₹2,150 crore, leaving a shortfall of ₹650 crore. To bridge this gap, PMC has been intensifying tax recovery efforts through notices, special collection teams, and band squads. Now, for the first time, women employees—who usually handle office work—have been included in the field operations for tax collection.

Tax collection often leads to disputes with property owners, which is why collection teams are usually accompanied by male employees and security personnel. However, this year, women employees have been given the opportunity to take on the challenge.

So far, these women-led teams have already recovered ₹10 lakh in tax dues and seized three properties, according to Jagtap. The initiative is being seen as a significant step in empowering women employees and expanding their roles beyond office work.

PMC officials are hopeful that this effort will help in achieving the tax collection target before the financial year ends.
