Pune, October 26th 2018: Universal Hospital doctors successfully completed Spinal Cord Reconstruction surgery and gave a 23-year old a new lease of life.

A team of four doctors from Pune, led by renowned orthopaedic Dr. Anant Bagul successfully executed on of the rarest surgery. A surgical procedure was performed on 23-year old Yemen national Mansoor Mohammad Hussain-who was shot in the neck while serving in the Yemenese army in the ongoing civil war. The injury paralysed his entire body majorly his upper body. Mansoor was after six months referred to Dr. Bagul.
CERVICAL LECTINOMY SURGERY
The surgery involved transplanting cells from his Bone Marrow into the defected part of the cord. In the first two operations, surgeons removed patient’s mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow and prepared a micro celluloid graft which was then entered into the gap created by the injury. The stem cells provided a pathway to enable fibres above and below the injury to reconnect, using the nerve grafts to bridge the gap in the cord. Dr. Bagul was supported by Dr Katkar(neurosurgeon), Dr Shinte and Dr Manoj Bansode.
Dr Bagul said,” It’s amazing to see how regeneration of the spinal cord can save lives. This is something that was never thought of and was impossible for many years.” When asked about the progress of the patient he said that” The patient is showing excellent recovery and since surgery has regained muscle mass, sensations and movement mostly on both upper and lower limbs. This is the evidence that the recovery is due to regeneration, as signals from the brain controlling muscles travel down through the spinal cord. However, it will take Mansoor to be normal in around two to three years.”
Mansoor resides in the hospital under observation and will be followed up by the doctors regularly for the progress. Although he could not speak the local language properly but seemed happy as he was able to feel sensation on his hands, could move his back a little and the shoulder and elbow joints as well. All this was not possible pre-surgery.
