Pune, 29th October 2026: Zavaray S. Poonawalla has been honoured with the ‘Legend of Indian Horse Racing’ award at the Turf Authorities of India (TAI) Racing Excellence Awards ceremony held in Mysuru on October 24, in recognition of his contribution to Indian horse racing and efforts to support the sport’s growth across the country.

The Poonawalla family’s long-standing association with thoroughbred breeding and horse racing has contributed to the development of the industry in India. Poonawalla has also supported race clubs facing financial difficulties, including initiatives linked to racing infrastructure and the organisation of major racing events.

One of the key areas of his involvement has been the Bangalore Turf Club, particularly during the period when the club faced the challenge of relocating its racecourse. According to the organisers, Poonawalla supported efforts to establish the new racing facility at Kunigal, helping the club continue its operations during a critical phase.

He has also extended financial support to the Mysore Race Club to organise major racing events, including the Mysore Derby and the Zavaray Poonawalla Indian Invitation Cup. Other prominent races associated with his support include the 1,000 Guineas, 2,000 Guineas and St Leger.

The support has been aimed at sustaining racing activities and providing continuity for those whose livelihoods depend on the industry, including jockeys, trainers, stable staff and other racing professionals.

Focus shifts to reopening Madras Racecourse

Poonawalla has now turned his attention to efforts to reopen the historic Madras Racecourse. The initiative is part of a broader focus on supporting financially struggling race clubs and preventing the closure of racing institutions across India.

Another stated objective is to strengthen Indian horse racing and improve its standing internationally.

His recognition at the TAI Racing Excellence Awards comes amid ongoing efforts by stakeholders to sustain racing infrastructure, support race clubs and preserve the sport’s established institutions in India.
