15 Dead, 60 Injured in Kanchanjunga Express Derailment: Tripura Government Steps In
Kolkata, 17th June 2024: The Tripura government is dispatching a team to the location of the Kanchanjunga train incident in West Bengal to offer assistance to passengers from the state, according to an official statement on Monday.
Reports indicate that at least 15 passengers lost their lives and 60 others sustained injuries when three rear coaches of the stationary Agartala-Sealdah Kanchanjunga Express derailed due to a collision with a goods train in Darjeeling district, West Bengal, this morning.
In response to the situation, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has communicated with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw regarding the accident and is closely monitoring developments, as stated by the state’s Home Secretary Pradip Kumar Chakravarty during a press briefing.
“We have contacted railway authorities to obtain passenger information to ascertain any impact on individuals from our state,” Chakravarty mentioned.
The Tripura Home Secretary further informed that a team comprising two members from Kolkata’s Tripura Bhavan will depart for the accident site at Rangapani to provide necessary support to potential victims from Tripura.
“The team plans to arrive at the site from Bagdogra airport by Monday evening. Additionally, the state government has announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh to the families of any deceased individuals from Tripura due to the accident, along with covering medical expenses for the injured,” he added.
