2.95 crore rural houses to be built under Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 23rd has given its approval for the implementation of the rural housing scheme of Pradhan Mantri Grameen Awaas Yojana.
Under the scheme, financial assistance will be provided for construction of pucca houses to all houseless and households living in dilapidated houses.
29.5 million (2.95 crore) houses will be built under the scheme till 2022, out of which 10 million (1 crore) houses will be built over the next three years.
An assistance of Rs 1.20 lakh per dwelling unit in plain areas and Rs 1.30 lakhs in hilly areas would be provided for house building. The beneficiary can avail of Rs 70,000 loan, which is optional.
The expenditure involved in implementing the project in a span of 3 years from 2016-17 to 2018-19 is Rs.81,975 crore.
The scheme would be implemented in rural areas throughout India except Delhi and Chandigarh. The cost of houses would be shared between Centre and States in the ratio 60:40 in plain areas and 90:10 for North Eastern and hilly states.
Identification of beneficiaries eligible for assistance and their prioritisation will be done using
information from Socio Economic and Caste Census (SECC) to ensure transparency and objectivity. Annual list of beneficiaries will be identified from the total list through participatory process by the Gram Sabha.
