582 Treated During Ganesh Visarjan by Pune Police’s Vighnaharta Nyas Initiative
Pune, 18th September 2024: During the Ganesh Visarjan (Immersion) procession in Pune, the Pune Police’s ‘Vighnaharta Nyas’ initiative provided essential medical assistance to 582 individuals who experienced health problems caused by the large crowd and intense heat.
This annual event, known for attracting large numbers of participants, relied heavily on the medical service to maintain the safety of attendees. Within four hours of the procession starting yesterday, 122 people had already been treated for various health issues.
Common complaints included dizziness from dehydration, respiratory difficulties due to overcrowding, and asthma and coughing triggered by colored smoke from drum and tasha groups. Additional injuries included wounds from metal parts of trolleys and tractors, head injuries from heavy drumming instruments, and fainting caused by high blood pressure exacerbated by noise and crowd pressure.
The Vighnaharta Nyas set up emergency medical stations along the procession route, ensuring swift assistance for those needing medical attention. This year, the initiative involved 112 doctors, medical students, nurses, and volunteers. Ambulances and emergency aid centers were also strategically placed to handle emergencies.
Key figures leading the medical efforts included Dr. Milind Bhoi, Dr. Nandkishor Borse, Dr. Shantanu Jagdale, Dr. Preeti Victor, Dr. Nitin Bora, and Sadashiv Kundan. Support came from organizations like Tarachand Hospital, Tilak Ayurveda College, and My Mauli Old Age Home.
The service operated for two days leading up to the main immersion, assisting a total of 582 people. While many received on-site treatment for minor issues, others were taken to Tarachand Hospital and Sassoon General Hospital for further care.
