Nana Peth, 3rd June 2025: A tragic incident occurred in Pune’s Nana Peth area on Sunday (1st June) evening, where an eight-year-old girl died after receiving a fatal electric shock from a streetlight pole. The victim, Sayali Dambe, was playing near her home in the Doke Talim locality when she accidentally came into contact with a live electric pole in Inamdar Chowk. Another young boy accompanying her was also injured in the incident but is reported to be in stable condition.

According to the information given by Senior Police Inspector Umesh Gitte from the Samarth Police Station, Sayali was playing with a group of children when she touched the pole and was immediately electrocuted due to a live current running through it. A bus driver passing by noticed the accident and acted swiftly, using a wooden stick to separate the children from the pole, potentially saving the injured boy’s life.

Both children were rushed to a nearby private hospital by local residents. Sadly, Sayali succumbed to her injuries during treatment.

An accidental death report has been registered at Samarth Police Station, and a site inspection has been conducted. Authorities from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have been contacted for further investigation. A report has been requested from MSEDCL to determine the exact cause of the incident. Inspector Gitte assured that legal action would be taken against those found responsible after the inquiry.

The streetlight pole involved in the accident is under the jurisdiction of the PMC, which is responsible for its maintenance and electricity supply. MSEDCL has clarified that it holds no responsibility for the incident, stating that the streetlight and its upkeep fall entirely under PMC’s purview.
