10 – 15% population in Pune are under high risk of heart ailments due to tobacco consumption reveals Abnormality

27th May 2015, PuneTobacco consumption is one of the major causes of death and illness worldwide. ICMR Study states that it is one of the leading causes for 30 % of all cancers in India. A recent Abnormality Report put together by Indus Health Plus, pioneer in preventive health check-up from January 2015 to April 2016, revealed that 10 – 15% population in Pune are under high risk of heart ailments due to tobacco consumption.The sample size for the study was 23,145people.

The report suggests that smoking causes female infertility. More than 15% pregnant females were consuming tobacco in different forms and didn’t know about the harmful effects. As young as 25-30 years old females and males smoke more than 5-7 cigarettes a day which increases the risk of COPD. Bronchitis in males between the age group of 35-45 years is common. 10 – 12% of smokers in the age group of 45-55 years were detected with respiratory diseases.

Mr. Amol Naikawadi, Preventive Healthcare Specialist, Indus Health Plus says, “COPD is leading cause of deaths in Maharashtra. 12% of males in the age group of 30-35 years are more prone to COPD as compared to females. Consumption of tobacco is an emerging social and public health problem and there is a need to sensitize masses towards the ill-effects of tobacco. Therefore, we strongly believe public awareness campaign will make people conscious and create a positive impact in quitting tobacco.”

Nicotine present in tobacco has adverse effects on bone, 9 % of those in the middle age group who smoke have bone density abnormalities as well.12% of population were under the risk of lung cancer while 7-8% of them are under the risk of head and neck cancer.

Dr. Ajit Kulkarni, Chest Physician, Sahyadri Hospital said, “Consumption of Tobacco in any form increases the risk of COPD, Brain Stroke, Heart Attack, Asthma, Lung Cancer, Interspatial Lung Disease – respiratory disease and Diabetes. Younger generation consumes smoke and smokeless tobacco due to peer pressure, style statement and stress.  Strong will power, medical counselling and oral medication help to overcome smoking.”

WHO’s recommendation of plain packaging initiative on cigarettes pack will help to limit the consumption of Tobacco. Experts are of the opinion that health risks can be controlled if people will quit tobacco be physically active and eat healthy diet.
