98 Pune Bridges Found Needing Repairs; PMC Completes Work on 21
Pune, 23rd September 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has completed repair work on 21 bridges and flyovers across the city, with repairs to the remaining bridges and culverts planned in phases based on the availability of funds. Work on some of the structures is already underway.
The repair work is expected to extend the lifespan of the city’s ageing bridges and improve their structural condition.
The PMC had conducted a structural audit of bridges, flyovers and culverts through expert consultants last year. The audit identified 98 bridges and flyovers requiring repairs. Of these, repair work on five structures will be carried out by contractors under the Defect Liability Period (DLP).
The PMC’s Special Projects Department subsequently took up repair work on the remaining 93 structures. The bridges were categorised into A, B and C groups, with those in the A category being given the highest priority.
“In the first phase, repair work was taken up on 10 of the 11 identified bridges, while in the second phase, work was undertaken on 11 of 17 bridges. Work on some of these bridges, along with structures included in the third phase, is currently underway. The repairs will help extend the lifespan of the bridges,” said Dinkar Gojare, head of the PMC’s Special Projects Department.
Repairs include bearings, expansion joints
The repair work on the 21 bridges includes replacement of bearings, expansion joints and structural strengthening.
The PMC has carried out the work while taking measures to minimise disruption to traffic, particularly during peak hours.
Repairs to the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Bridge were delayed due to work on a water pipeline. The pipeline work has now been completed, and the PMC is expected to complete the bridge repairs soon.
The civic body will also take up repair work on bridges and culverts included in subsequent phases, depending on fund availability.
Annual inspection of bridges planned
Following the structural audit conducted last year, the PMC has now decided to conduct annual inspections of bridges in the city.
The civic body said regular inspections would help it monitor the condition of bridges and undertake preventive measures and repairs when required.
₹8 crore sanctioned for third phase
The PMC had allocated around ₹10 crore for repair work under the first phase and ₹17 crore for the second phase.
Under the third phase, ₹8 crore has been sanctioned in the civic budget for bridge repairs. The PMC expects this allocation to cover repair work on around 14 to 15 bridges.
The third phase will also include seven bridges left from the first and second phases, along with other structures identified for repairs.
