Pune Traffic Policemen Beat Youth, People Ask ‘Is This Allowed’

Nana Peth, 23rd February 2022: A video of a traffic branch policeman slapping a youth has gone viral on social media. The incident took place near Sant Kabir Chowk in Nana Peth today.

Speaking to PunekarNews.in, a passerby who recorded the incident, said, “I saw the cops assaulting the youth on the other side of the road around 5.30 pm today.”

The video shows policemen hitting the youth.

When reached out for comments, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic Branch) Rahul Shrirame told Punekar News, “I am not aware of the incident. We have not received any complaint.”

After we shared the video, DCP Shrirame got the incident verified. “The youth was asked to stop the two-wheeler but he fled. However, due to traffic, he could not escape. When the policemen reached there, he left the vehicle which fell on the hand of our policeman who got hurt. In the melee, the youth used abusive words following which the policeman hit him. The youth was issued a challan of Rs 5,000 for rules violations.”

People have been asking whether Pune police will take action against its own staff for violating the rules.
