15 Indian student teams selected to be at the finals of Shell Eco-marathon 2017
National, 14 November, 2016 –By mid-century, there could be 9 billion people on the planet, and around three-quarters of us will live in cities. Energy demand could be double of year 2000 levels. The challenge is for the world to produce much more energy with much less CO2. Fuel efficiency can contribute significantly towards ensuring a low-carbon future and that is what the bright young engineering students participating in the Shell Eco-marathon 2017 (SEM) are aiming to achieve. SEM, which is being held as part of the Make the Future Festival in Singapore, between 16-19 March 2017, invites student teams across the world to design, build, test and drive energy efficient vehicles that can cover longest distance with the least amount of fuel. Sustainable mobility will be at the core of these innovations. Currently, the competition is in its eighth edition.
Universities which have been selected to represent India at the event include Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani; BML Munjal University, Gurgaon; Delhi Technological University, Delhi; Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)- Banaras Hindu University, Banaras; Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University For Women, Delhi; Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi; K.J. Somaiya College Of Engineering, Mumbai; Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management and Engineering, Mumbai; Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, Gujarat; RV College of Engineering; Bangalore; Sir M Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology, Bangalore; SRM University, Delhi; SRM University, Chennai; Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) University, Vellore.

Manupriya Vats, Team Manager of Team Panthera from Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women (IGDTU) said, “We are proud to be Asia’s only all women team to build an energy efficient vehicle offering great mileage. Reaching the final phase of Shell Eco-marathon is a great achievement for us and this has further motivated our team to double our efforts to design and build our prototype, Iris 2.0. We hope to make our university and country proud.”
The third and final phase of this competition will run till February 14, 2017, where student teams will share information on the logistics of their prototype in addition to details of travel and accommodation.
