Pune Court Grants Rahul Gandhi Extension in Savarkar Remarks Case; Hearing Scheduled for January 10
Shivajinagar, 2nd December 2024: A Pune court has extended the deadline for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to appear in the case related to his alleged derogatory remarks about Hindu ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
Gandhi, currently attending the ongoing Lok Sabha session, has been given time until January 10, 2025, to present himself in court. The order was issued by Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Amol Shinde after Gandhi’s lawyer filed an application citing his parliamentary responsibilities.
The court had earlier issued summons to Gandhi, which were reportedly delivered to his residence. However, logistical errors had previously delayed the delivery of the summons, prompting a reissuance.
Gandhi’s legal representative, Advocate Milind Pawar, explained that as a sitting Member of Parliament and Leader of the Opposition, Gandhi’s obligations in the ongoing winter session of Parliament prevented him from appearing in court on the scheduled date, December 2.
During the hearing, Advocate Sangram Kolhatkar, representing Satyaki Savarkar, great-grandnephew of Veer Savarkar, argued for issuing a non-bailable warrant against Gandhi. Kolhatkar contended that Gandhi’s absence despite receiving the summons warranted action.
In response, Advocate Pawar highlighted Gandhi’s pressing parliamentary duties, including discussions on critical bills, and sought the court’s permission for his absence. Taking into account the circumstances, the court granted the extension but emphasized that Gandhi must appear at the next hearing.
During the proceedings, Advocate Kolhatkar drew the court’s attention to Gandhi’s alleged continued remarks against Savarkar in public speeches. The court instructed Advocate Pawar to advise Gandhi against making any controversial or derogatory statements about Savarkar until the case reaches its conclusion.
The next hearing in the case is scheduled for January 10, 2025, providing Gandhi with a final opportunity to comply with the court’s directives.
The case against Rahul Gandhi stems from comments he allegedly made about Veer Savarkar, which sparked legal action and criticism from various quarters.
