Pune, 3rd December 2024: Rains in southern states like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have significantly impacted the cultivation of shevga (drumsticks), leading to reduced supply and skyrocketing prices in markets across Maharashtra. Retail prices have surged to Rs 500-600 per kg, depending on quality, as demand outpaces supply.

Traditionally priced at Rs 100-120 per kg, drumsticks now cost Rs 3,500-4,000 per 10 kg in the wholesale market. The situation is most acute in cities like Mumbai, Thane, and Pune. Agricultural experts attribute the spike to return rains that disrupted cultivation and harvest cycles in southern states, where most drumsticks is grown.

The Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Navi Mumbai has reported a steep decline in drumsticks arrivals. Trader Ramdas Katkar noted that prices are expected to normalize only after fresh arrivals in late December.

With drumsticks being a popular choice during the colder months, retail demand has traditionally spiked during this period. However, high prices have prompted many consumers to switch to more affordable alternatives. “While drumsticks remain in demand due to their seasonal appeal, many have shifted to legumes and other vegetables that are more budget-friendly,” said Prakash Dhamdhere, a vegetable trader.

Meanwhile, some regions are reporting slightly lower retail prices for a local variety which is being sold at Rs 120-150 per kg.
